As per FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), there is an announcement related to the new food packaging regulation. The provision about Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011is now replaced with Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. All food products sold in India need to comply with the new Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. In India, the foods that are placed for sales much have the packaging so that it entirely complies with the food packaging.
As per the provision of FSSAI, there is a condition for all the packaging of food. Packaged food must be Stored in a utensil or container that is safe and secure. But if the box or a utensil is rusty, leaks, chipped, or contain dents, it is not fit for packaging. It is also essential that the container made of plastic material conform to the following Indian Standards Specification for food packaging. All packaged food containers should be securely packed and sealed to avoid any loss. And if the container is not securely packed, then it could become unfit for packaging.
The container, which is made of aluminum material, must be conforming in chemical composition to IS:20 specification for Cast Aluminium andamp; Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy for utensils. The regulation also provides that the exterior of the cans used for packaging of food items shall be free from any significant dents, distortion, or rust to be fit for packaging. Any enameled containers which have become chipped and rusty are considered unfit for packaging. And it is also provided that the tin and plastic container once used shall not be reused for packaging of any edible oils and fats.
Milk and Milk Products
There are specific packaging requirements for milk and milk products that must be adhered like the bottling or filling of containers with heat-treated milk, and milk products should be carried out mechanically. And it is also essential that the automatic sealing of the container shall be carried out. After the packaging of the dairy product, it must be immediately stored in the provided storage room. The food packaging rule, wrapping, or packaging that is already used shall not be re-used for any dairy product packaging. There is an exception to this food packaging rule, like the type of container that may be cleaning and disinfected could be re-used for dairy products packaging.
In the Milk and milk products packaging, there must be a proper sealing process that ensures the protection of milk from any external origin❜s adverse effects. The design and the sealing device are required to be so that it shows the evidence of opening clear and easy to check when opened. All these requirements are essential to be followed for the packaging of the Milk and Milk products before sale.
Edible Oil and Fat
The packaging requirements of Edible Oil or Fat is that the tin plate used for the manufacturing of tin containers for packaging shall conform to the standards of the prime grade quality contained in BIS Standards.
Fruits and Vegetables
The fruit products must is packed in a container that should be sealed adequately. And it is just that it cannot be opened without destroying the licensing number and unique identification mark of the manufacture to be displayed on the top or neck of the bottle. The cans must be made up of suitable tin plates to packing the fruits, juices, and vegetables. Only bottles/jars are capable of giving hermetic seal for bottled fruits,juice, and vegetables. Preserve food items like jams, jellies, and marmalades shall be packed in new cans, Bottles, aluminum containers, clean jars, and new canisters shall be used to provide a secure seal.
The packaging of the juices, crush, cordials, squashes, barley water, and other beverages shall be done in clean bottles and securely cleaned. Polythene lining of gauge or suitable lacquered cans should be used for pickles packaging, and the jars, clean bottles, wooden casks, the tin container must be used to cover from inside. The paper bags, cardboard, or wooden boxes shall be used to packaging candied fruits, peels, and dried fruits and vegetables. All the fruits and vegetables must be packed as per the quality standard laid down by BIS.
Canned Meat Products
For the packaging of the canned meat products, the new sanitary top cans are considered suitable. And the cans used for the filling of pork luncheon meat should be coated internally with edible gelatin and lard. It must also line with vegetable parchment paper before filing the meat. Under commercial conditions of storage and transport, the meat products must be packed and sealed in containers to withstand spoilage.
The drinking water must be packed in clean, hygienic, transparent, colorless, and tamper-proof bottles. And these bottles should be made of polyethylene conforming to IS: 12252 or IS 10910 or food-grade polycarbonate or a sterile glass bottle which is suitable for preventing contamination or adulteration of water. All the plastic packaging materials shall follow the requirements that prescribed overall migration and color migration limits.
